Acclaimed Australian songwriter Liz Stringer is back with her first new material since the release of her 2025 LP The Second High (★★★★ - The Guardian and The Big Issue).
Written about Stringer’s close friend since teenage years Fin, who died suddenly, Sister is a deeply personal reflection on friendship, grief and enduring love.
Recorded with producer/engineer Jono Steer at The Aviary Studios in Melbourne in the summer of 2025/26, the track was mixed by Steer and mastered by Joe Carra at Crystal Mastering.
“Sister” is released through AWAL and showcases Stringer’s distinctive songwriting alongside her versatility as a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist. The track features Dave Williams on drums and percussion, with the voices of three close friends, including Fin’s blood sister Marcail, sharing memories of Fin woven through the bridge.
“I wanted to be able to write and release a song without having to wait to produce a full album, and for there to be no outcome attached to its release except that it be a dedication to my beautiful friend. When Fin died, it was life-altering for me and for many people I love. Writing and recording this song has been an important part of beginning to process that devastating loss.
It was important to me to create a song, and a sonic palette, that Finny would love — full of joy and light, and a celebration of sisterhood — because those are the things we gave each other over years and years of being pivotal people in each other’s lives. We will always be sisters.”
One of Australia’s most respected songwriters and instrumentalists, Stringer has released seven studio albums and received honours including Port Fairy Folk Festival’s 2023 Artist of the Year, Woodford Folk Festival’s 2020 Emerging Legend of Australian Song and places on the 2022 and 2025 APRA Song of the Year shortlists (Dangerous and Coming Home). The Second High debuted at #3 on the Australian Albums ARIA Chart, while 2021’s First Time Really Feeling won the 2022 AIR Award for Best Blues and Roots Album.
Stringer continues to forge a fiercely independent path, having earned a cult-like status among her ever-growing international fanbase. She currently lives in Germany.
